If you’ve recently installed indoor roller blinds, you’re probably already enjoying the numerous benefits in your home. They offer UV protection, protect your privacy, plus you can still admire the view while being comfortable in summer and winter temperatures!

Indoor blinds are easy to use, and they’re a breeze to clean & maintain. Keeping them looking fresh is completely fuss-free in four simple steps. Read on to find out how!

How Do I Clean My Indoor Roller Blinds?

If your indoor roller blinds are made of PVC or easy-wipe fabric with a glossy, smooth appearance and texture, it won’t take long at all to freshen them up. Either wipe them down with a damp cloth or give them a light vacuum to retain their tip-top shape.

Cleaning Roller Blinds with a Damp Cloth

To clean your roller blinds with a damp cloth, you’ll need:

  • A bucket
  • A cloth or sponge
  • Gentle cleaner
  • Warm water

Follow these four simple steps:

  1. Roll down your indoor blinds completely. This ensures you reach all areas.
  2. Fill a bucket with warm water and add either some gentle cleaner or dishwashing liquid.
  3. Using a sponge, apply a little of the mixture onto your indoor blinds. Tip: Start at the bottom and work your way up.
  4. Leave your indoor roller blinds open to dry properly—preferably in a ventilated room—before rolling them up again. This helps avoid any mildew, mould or smells from developing.

Don’t forget about your plastic roller blind chains or cords! These can also be cleaned with the same mixture. If you have brass or steel chains, they’ll become rusty through water exposure. Instead, use a natural solution of lemon juice, hot water, salt and vinegar, similar to how you’d clean jewellery. Just be sure to wipe them completely dry with a lint-free towel when you’re done!

While you’re at it, check your safety device is still operating properly. If it isn’t, replace the faulty chain, cord or mechanism.

A silicone spray will clean your blind mechanism. The result? Dirt removal, plus less squeaks and stiffness! Tip: Avoid spraying onto the actual indoor blind fabric. This could become bleached or discoloured.

Cleaning Roller Blinds with a Vacuum Cleaner

Cleaning your roller blinds with a vacuum cleaner is just as easy:

  1. Roll down your indoor blinds completely.
  2. Use the soft brush attachment.
  3. Vacuum over the entire surface of your indoor blinds. Tip: Be sure to vacuum both sides to clean off any layers of cobwebs, dead bugs and dust.
  4. If your blinds are extremely dirty, vacuuming could be the first step before a deeper clean.

How Often Should I Clean My Roller Blinds?

You’d be surprised at how much grime your blinds collect over time. The best is to clean your indoor roller blinds at least twice a month. This helps get rid of any dirt or dust and prevents stain build-up.

Make cleaning your indoor blinds part of your regular house cleaning routine. This way they’ll always look their best.

How Do I Deep Clean My Indoor Blinds?

Struggling with some stubborn stains? Time for a deep clean in the bathtub! Clean your indoor blinds in these 10 steps:

  1. Unmount your blinds and remove them from their roller.
  2. Fill your bath tub halfway with warm water. Bathtub too small? Use a kiddies’ paddling pool as an alternative.
  3. Add a gentle laundry detergent to the water until it starts bubbling.
  4. If your blinds are white, add tiny quantities of mild bleach and mix well.
  5. Place your blinds carefully in the bathtub as flat as possible and soak for a few hours. If they’re too long, fold them.
  6. Start at one end of a blind and gentle wipe it back & forth with a soft cloth or sponge to help remove dirt or stains. Scrub away any lingering spots with an old toothbrush.
  7. Drain your bathtub water.
  8. Fill the tub again with clean water for rinsing. Tip: If you have a flexible shower head, use it for a spray rinse until all the soap is gone.
  9. Hang your blinds over a drying rack, shower rod or on your clothesline and allow them to fully dry. Try directing a fan onto your blinds to speed up the drying time.
  10. Attach the blinds onto their roller, mount them again and you’re good to go!

Indoor roller blinds are affordable, practical and versatile. Their design can be made to match the exact décor and style of your home. With the added advantage of being easy to clean, all the more reason to include these in your living space.
